Understanding Point Spread Betting

Point spread betting is designed to create a more balanced betting market by handicapping the favorite and giving an advantage to the underdog. The favorite must win by more than the spread to "cover," while the underdog can lose the game but still cover the spread if they lose by less than the spread amount.

For example, if the Kansas City Chiefs are -6.5 against the Las Vegas Raiders at +6.5, the Chiefs must win by 7 or more points for a bet on the Chiefs to win. If the Raiders lose by 6 or fewer points (or win outright), a bet on the Raiders would win. The half-point (0.5) in spreads eliminates the possibility of a push (tie).

Common Point Spread Rules

  • Favorite (-6.5): Must win by more than 6.5 points to cover the spread
  • Underdog (+6.5): Can lose by up to 6 points or win outright to cover
  • Push (Tie): Occurs when a spread is a whole number (e.g., -7) and the favorite wins by exactly that amount
  • Standard Odds: Typically -110 on both sides, requiring $110 to win $100
  • Alternate Spreads: Bookmakers often offer different spreads with adjusted odds
